[audio]Bobby Day - CFRW Winnipeg - March 1979 - Free the Airchecks!
A disc jockey's first time on-the-air can be a shaky experience. Here's an example. It's Bobby Day handling his first shift at CFRW in Winnipeg, Manitoba in March of 1979. In the background, desperately trying to help Bobby, is 'RW's Al Stewart.

[audio]Ed Cook - WVON, Chicago - January 29, 1966 - Free the Airchecks!
This Ed Cook aircheck is often sold on eBay and is probably one of the better-circulated R&B airchecks out there, and for good reason. If Ed was a cranky sort anyway, the fact that his car wouldn't start in subzero weather guaranteed that his on-air performance was really going to be special. It didn't help matters that, right off the bat, the wrong record was played. The intro to the Vontastics' version of "Day Tripper" follows the WVON jingle, and Cook is having none of it...

[audio]Lucky Cordell - WVON, Chicago - January 29, 1966 - Free the Airchecks!
What do you do when a DJ is out of town and his substitute is late due to the freezing cold weather? Well, on the frigid afternoon of January 29, 1966, WVON's Lucky Cordell extended his Saturday program to cover for the "Nassau Daddy," Ed Cook, slated to fill in for E. Rodney Jones, whose car wouldn't start due to Chicago's subzero weather. Lucky Cordell, "The Baron of Bounce," worked at WGRY in Gary and then at Chicago's WGES/WYNR (hosting his popular "House of Hits" program at both stations) b...

[audio]Gladys 'Gee Gee' Hill - KCOH, Houston - 1970 - Free the Airchecks!
The late Gladys "Gee Gee" Hill from Houston's KCOH. The station, the first black-oriented radio station in Texas, started in 1953 as a "sunup to sundown" broadcaster and is still on the air today, bringing a mixture of talk, R&B, zydeco, gospel and more from the 1430 spot on the dial, twenty-four hours a day. Hill was one of a handful of female DJs to make a mark in the history of classic R&B radio (Detroit's Martha Jean "The Queen" and Chicago's Merry Dee and Yvonne Daniels are the only ones to...

[audio]Jim Stagg - WCFL Chicago - Friday, March 18, 1966 - Free the Airchecks!
Stagg was the "afternoon drive" (the station's high-profile 3 to 6 p.m. slot) disc jockey at Chicago's Voice of Labor, WCFL. He interviewed nearly every major rock star of the 1960s, including Neil Diamond, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, The Rolling Stones, the Supremes, The Monkees, and Simon & Garfunkel. Stagg eschewed the flashy theatrics of other Top-40 radio hosts in favor a straightforward rock and roll show that kept the focus on the music...

[audio]Godfrey Kerr - KTYM, Los Angeles, Thursday, March 31, 1966 - Free the Airchecks!
What a rare gem! It's The Godfrey Show, with Godfrey Kerr, on the peanut-whistle daytimer KTYM-AM near Los Angeles. The music mix is outstanding! Only choice cuts of R&B (Otis Redding, The Temptations), mixed in with some of the finest Rock (The Who, Paul Revere and the Raiders). If I had only lived in L.A. in '66 (and was lucky enough to receive the signal ;) THIS would have been my station of choice.

The Boss of the Bay! Radio K-Y-A! This is the Top 40 where legendary programmer (and Daddy of the Boss sound) Bill Drake cut his teeth. It was also the home of FM rock radio pioneer Tom Donahue, while he was still a Top 40 jock. Check out the afternoon drive show with Bob Mitchell.

[audio]George Oxford - KDIA San Francisco - Friday, February 22, 1963 - Free the Airchecks!
You may be familiar with the re-creation of a KSAN Jumpin' George Oxford show from '55 on the CRUISIN' 1955 LP. THIS is the real thing, recorded off-the-air in '63 when G.O. was the morning host on 1310 KDIA. By this date, Oxford was no longer using the "Jumpin'" monicker, having lost the right to do so in a dispute with former employer KSAN.

[audio]John Stone - KJR Seattle - Friday, November 11, 1960 - Free the Airchecks!
A more laid-back approach to early Top 40 radio courtesy of John Stone (ex of New Orleans and later Program Director at Seattle's KOL). The voice heard on the station promos in Seattle radio legend Pat O'Day. The Chun King commercial is from the mind of humorist Stan Freberg.

[audio]Rockin' Robin Scott - WIL St. Louis - Wednesday, February 8, 1961 - Free the Airchecks!
Classic high-energy Top 40 sound via WIL St. Louis and Rockin' Robin Scott (actually Bob Dayton). Interesting to note that amid all the ruckus and commotion, the #1 song on the Silver Dollar Survey that week was courtesy of Lawrence Welk and His Champagne Music. Also, have a close listen to the station IDs. That's the voice of the legendary Dan Ingram.

A 14 veteran of WFIL, Jay Cook spent a number of those years at the helm as Program Director. Later, he was the man responsible for importing Memphis morning man Rick Dees to KIIS-FM in Los Angeles.
